English
At Cicely Haughton, we believe that a quality English curriculum should develop children’s love of reading, writing and discussion, exposing them to a variety of high quality texts and stimuli. We strive to ensure that all our pupils receive a well-rounded learning experience when reading, writing, speaking and listening, which will equip them with the fundamental tools to achieve in the school and beyond.
Our curriculum intends to enable all children to:
- read easily, fluently and with good understanding
- develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
- use discussion in order to learn, showing an ability to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
- have a love for reading, writing and high-quality literature
- acquire a wide vocabulary, and an understanding of grammatical knowledge
- appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
- write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting language and style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
- become competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.
These aims are embedded across our English and Phonics lessons and in the wider curriculum. Our provision, which follows a clear pathway of progression as it advances through the primary curriculum, enables children to confidently master the English language whilst being presented with a range of inspiring reading materials.
The school delivers the RWI phonics schemes for children who require the intensive phonics intervention and continues the phonics-based approach within the RWI spelling scheme. English is planned for, following the Literacy and Language scheme of work. Each unit plan taught from Literacy and Language is further adapted and individualised in order meet the requirements of the individual group of children being taught.
